Why choose Spirit of Hemp?

Why choose Spirit of Hemp?

Our highly successful oil is inspired and based on the groundbreaking research into terpenes by Dr Ethan Russo.

"Terpenes are the life force, the quintessential 5th element or the spirit of the plant."

– Dr. Ethan Russo, Neurologist and Medical Scientist.

"Spirit of Hemp produces a whole raw hemp extract, rich in terpenes and abundant with Life Force.
We prize the "quintessential 5th element" or "spirit of the plant" so highly,

we not only created our oil around it, we named our brand after it.

-Louise Callinan, Founder of Spirit of Hemp

What are Terpenes?

You know them, you love them, because terpenes are the parts of a plant that you can smell. They are organic chemical compounds produced by plants, that carry aromatic or flavonoid properties.

Aromatherapists have been preaching about the properties of terpenes for hundreds of years.

Terpenes are well known for giving the plant, its unique aromatic signature. These essences activate the olfactory system, which when inhaled, can send messages to the limbic system of your brain, resulting in a cascading effect of positive benefits. These fragrances may release stored memories, change your mood, calm you down in stressful times, among other physiological and physical benefits. (1)

Research on cannabis terpenes shows that they work in conjunction with the cannabinoids of the plant. In fact, often they help mediate our body’s interaction with the cannabinoids. However, research is also showing that terpenes may carry a pharmacological value equal to that of the cannabinoids.

There are at least 80-100 terpenes unique to cannabis. The combination of terpenes and cannabinoids is actually responsible for the entire success of medical cannabis that we all appreciate today. Terpenes enhance the health effects of cannabis by influencing how we process cannabinoids such as CBD and CBDA.

Dr Ethan Russo published an article in 2011, in the British Journal of Pharmacology and pointed out the therapeutic properties of terpenes in cannabis. He described the cannabinoid-terpene interaction as a “synergy with respect to treatment of pain, inflammation, depression, anxiety, addiction, epilepsy, cancer, fungal and bacterial infections”. (1)

Simply put, when terpenes, the part that creates the aroma and taste of the plant work with cannabinoids, they form a synergy that creates stronger and better effects than both would achieve on their own.

Do all good whole plant hemp extracts contain terpenes?

All whole plant extracts, should contain some terpenes, but how many and is it enough?

Less than ideal

When CBD is extracted by any method, the plant matter must be dried. In drying the plant matter, up to 60% of the terpenes are lost. This leaves only approximately 40% of these highly beneficial compounds.

Spirit of Hemp is proud to be a leader in the industry, as we source steam distilled terpenes from the fresh hemp flowers and mix them back into the oil.

This terpene rich Hemp essential oil is also known as "Holy (Oil) Water" as it is by far the most precious of all legal cannabis derivatives. It takes between 100g to 5kg of aerial parts to create just 1g of this truly prized nectar (approximately 1ml). Blending in the pure cannabis terpenes (never artificial or food terpenes) is costly but valuable. Spirit of Hemp believes that this is a major factor contributing to the positive results experienced by our customers.

The undeniable research points to the importance of the synergistic effects of the terpenes and cannabinoids.

Spirit of Hemp understands, recognises and has acted on the findings of the studies regarding CBD extracts and terpenes. We believe this accounts for the outstanding success our oil is having with many and varied customers.

Hand -harvested hemp flowers

Hemp harvesting is normally done by machine, and the top part of the plant is cut off. The product will contain Flower, leaves and stems.
Spirit of Hemp has recently sourced hand harvested hemp flowers.
Pure hemp flowers are harvested and processed by hand to make Spirit of Hemp.

Our new formula is more floral in taste and lighter in colour reflecting this respectful harvesting process.
Over 100 people are employed to hand -harvest these "Life Force" giving flowers.
Spirit of Hemp believes that careful and conscious handling of the precious hemp flower contributes significantly towards the extremely high quality of our oil.

All ingredients are certified organic

Hemp is a bio-accumulator meaning it literally cleans toxic soil, absorbing the toxins. It is not enough to know that the hemp was grown free of pesticides and herbicides. It is of utmost importance that hemp is grown in certified organic soil. Every ingredient in Spirit of Hemp has been certified organic.

Whole plant extract

The “Entourage Effect” is a term coined by S. Ben-Shabat and Raphael Mechoulam back in 1998, to represent the biological synergy of cannabinoids and other compounds like flavonoids and terpenes. (1) Despite CBD being a widely studied compound in its own right, scientists have realised that the cannabinoid’s effectiveness partly depends on being accompanied by other molecules that are naturally present in the plant. This is called the entourage effect and is a kind of synergy, where the different botanical elements support and balance each other. A common example of this balance is CBD’s ability to counteract the psychoactive effect of THC.

RAW, contains CBD + CBDA and < .2% THC + THCA

In the case of Raw Hemp Oils, there is no heating process, meaning that both CBD + CBDA and THC + THCA are present, making it the ultimate in full spectrum CBD oil.
Cannabidiolic Acid (CBDA) : If you examined freshly picked cannabis, you would find very little CBD and THC. Instead, the most abundant cannabinoid would be its acidic precursors, CBDA and THCA. It was thought until recently that CBDA was benign with no therapeutic potential. But right now, preclinical research suggests that like CBD, CBDA might also reduce seizures, as well as having other benefits such as calming feelings of nausea. Research in the field of THCA is continuously progressing. Preliminary studies point out potential medicinal benefits. Including: The reduction of nausea induced vomiting and appetite loss (anti-emetic), protective capacities for treatment of neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Parkinson), anti-inflammatory effects beneficial for treating a wide range of diseases (e.g. Arthritis), Inhibition of prostate cancer growth (anti-proliferative).Scientists have also seen that CBDA is better absorbed in the body than CBD and quicker to take effect, suggesting that combining both cannabinoids might be more effective than just using them individually.

Our products are 3rd party Lab Tested

Spirit of Hemp believes in thorough testing and not just percentages of CBD. A good lab analysis needs to check for pesticides and heavy metals, microbial organisms, fungus, mould and other impurities along with CBD percentages. We have the third party independent lab tests. You will find up to date lab results on the product page under ingredients. Simple, transparent, and honest.

CO2 Extraction

CO2 extraction in a certified laboratory with strict standards for quality.
CO2 extraction is a particularly gentle method for extracting plant material. Through this process, all the valuable and healthy substances of the hemp plant are preserved for the final product.

Miron glass packaging

Miron glass has demonstrated outstanding capabilities of preserving substances contained in it for extended periods. Sprayed-, white-, green- and brown glass are permeable in the visible light spectrum and don’t offer enough protection against decomposition caused by light.

Chives experiment

As an experiment, several herbs and spices were stored for 3 months in several types of glass (white, brown, violet), and were either exposed to the sun for several hours a day or kept inside. After 2 months, the visible quality change was recorded with photographs, and the difference in smell determined in a blind test with volunteers. The illustration shows clearly that the chive samples that were exposed to the sun have bleached in the brown and white glass. As photographed in this illustration, the sample stored in MIRON violet glass shows no colour change. The smell of the chives stored in MIRON violet glass was also clearly stronger and fresher. (Dr Niggli and Dr Max Bracher) (3)

We believe these properties will hold true for the storage of our CBD oil as well.

Compared with blue, green, amber, or clear glass, Miron glass provides a host of benefits to compounds stored inside, including *Protection against decomposition *Preservation of the natural bio-energy of organic compounds
*Protection from the visible-light spectrum *Boost the potency of the stored compound *Protection against changes to the molecular structure of the compound
*In addition, Miron glass is 100% recyclable.
