About Our CBD

Whole plant CBD extract & why Spirit of Hemp use source whole plant extract.

There are two types of CBD extracts: whole plant CBD extracts and purified CBD extracts which are made from synthetic single-molecule CBD. Though synthetic single-molecule extracts have been the trend, two trailblazing studies have demonstrated that whole plant extracts have more therapeutic value.

The first study was published in Phytomedicine in 2009 by Dr. Wagner and Dr. Ulrich-Merzenich. Their research found that whole plant extracts are more beneficial than single-molecule extracts because of how all of the compounds within the whole plant work together or synergistically interact. This synergetic interaction in whole plant extracts gives them four advantages over single-molecule compounds:

  1. The ability to affect multiple targets within the body
  2. The ability to improve the absorption of active ingredients
  3. The ability to overcome bacterial defense mechanisms
  4. The ability to minimize adverse side effects

The two major components of our whole plant extract CBD & CBDA

CBD (Cannabidiol)

CBD is the second most prominent compound in cannabis. The cannabis plant contains many different cannabinoids, we have seen over 80 different and it seems there are many more. Most people have heard of a cannabinoid called THC, which is the ingredient in cannabis that gets users high. Unlike THC, CBD (cannabidiol) is non psychoactive cannabinoid and does not cause a high. CBD has antipsychotic effects which means CBD works completely the opposite way of THC. Numerous studies suggest that CBD also acts to reduce the intoxicating effects of THC.

CBDA (Cannabidiolic Acid)

The most common naturally occurring forms of CBD and THC are their acid forms, CBDa and THCa. Raw THCa is not psychoactive. It must be heated to form THC in order to become psychoactive. Raw cannabis is an historical component of the human diet. Here at Spirit of Hemp we believe that oils containing CBDa are more effective than those that contain CBD alone.

MCT oil

MCT oil is used as a carrier oil to enhance the bioavailability of the CBD. Compared to longer-chain fats, MCTs are absorbed more easily since there’s less work for the body to do breaking apart carbon bonds. MCTs are smaller, so they can permeate our cell membranes more easily and don’t require that we use special enzymes in order for our bodies to utilise them. MCT oil is known to be supportive for overall health — especially for people who have a difficult time digesting other forms of fats, including anyone with malabsorption problems, digestive disorders like leaky gut, Crohn’s disease, gallbladder infections and the like.

Essential Oil of Hemp (Cannabis)

Aromatic Hemp Blossom Essential oil is by far the most precious of all legal hemp derivatives; it takes between 100g to 5kg of aerial parts to distill just 1g of the sacred nectar (approximately 1ml).

Spirit of Hemp formula is enhanced with Essential oil from Hemp Blossoms.

Terpenes are the life force, the quintessential 5th element or the spirit of the plant. – Dr. Ethan Russo. Russo mentions that terpenes are a crucial aspect of the entourage effect that is a significant component to the therapeutic qualities of the cannabis plant.
